Is HDMI About to Be Replaced? GPMI, The Next Big Thing in Connectivity

For years, HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) has been the industry standard for connecting audio-visual devices such as televisions, computers, gaming consoles, and more. But technology never stands still, and now there's a new contender looking to redefine how we connect devices: the General Purpose Media Interface, or GPMI.

What is GPMI?
GPMI is a new connectivity standard developed by a consortium of over 50 technology companies, including major brands like Hisense and TCL. Its purpose is straightforward yet ambitious: to unify video, audio, data transfer, and power supply into a single cable solution. This could potentially simplify setups significantly, reducing the clutter of cables behind desks and TV units.

How Does GPMI Compare to HDMI?
The main area where GPMI outshines HDMI is bandwidth. HDMI 2.1, the latest widespread standard, offers a maximum bandwidth of 48Gbps. In contrast, GPMI promises an astonishing bandwidth of up to 192Gbps with its proprietary Type-B cable and 96Gbps via its USB-C variant. This enormous increase would allow for higher resolutions, faster refresh rates, and overall improved audio-visual performance.

Another significant advantage is power delivery. While HDMI cables can only carry limited power delivery, GPMI cables will support power delivery of up to 240W (USB-C type) or 480W (Type-B). This means that your TV or monitor could potentially be powered directly through the same cable that provides video and audio signals, greatly reducing the complexity and clutter of device setups.

Will GPMI Replace HDMI Soon?
While GPMI certainly holds promise, it’s not about to replace HDMI overnight. Major brands like Samsung, LG, and Sony have yet to support this new standard officially, and widespread adoption typically takes several years. In fact, HDMI itself continues to evolve, with HDMI 2.2 expected to offer 96Gbps bandwidth, keeping the competition alive and well. Initially, GPMI's rollout will focus on high-end home entertainment devices, with gradual adoption expected across the broader consumer electronics landscape.

What about DisplayPort (DP)?
In comparison to HDMI, DisplayPort (DP), a common alternative primarily used on computer graphics cards and monitors, supports up to 80 Gbps bandwidth (as of version 2.1) but does not deliver power to connected devices. DisplayPort is typically preferred by certain manufacturers because it can support higher resolutions and faster refresh rates than HDMI. Additionally, manufacturers do not pay a per-device royalty fee for using DisplayPort, unlike HDMI, which requires such payments. It is currently unknown whether a new standard for DisplayPort will be created and introduced to compete with GPMI.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?
For businesses, particularly those managing large IT environments or media-intensive setups, GPMI could significantly streamline installations and maintenance, however it might not be something we see for several years. Fewer cables and higher data speeds translate to easier device management, reduced downtime, and simpler troubleshooting.

At Mark One Consultants, we closely follow emerging technologies like GPMI to ensure our clients are always ahead of the curve. Our proactive approach means we’ll be ready to advise, implement, and support these new technologies as soon as they're commercially viable.
